Tips for your trip through New Zealand

When you are renting a car in Auckland, it is good to keep in mind that driving in New Zealand differs from what we are used to. Here are some tips that may come in handy when you are renting a car in New Zealand.

Tip 1: take it slow the first day.

Traveling abroad can be very exhausting and although its not mandatory in New Zealand we advice you to get a good night sleep before hitting the road.

Tip 2: drive on the left.

Driving on the left for the first time can be hard and although you will get used to it, it is important to stay alert. Especially in the morning when you hit the road again. Do not forget that this also effects the way you use roundabouts.

Tip 3: comply with overtaking bans.

Respect the overtaking bans (the double stripes on the road). This indicates busy, dangerous or unclear parts of the road. Regularly there are passing lanes available for overtaking.

Tip 4: park your car in the direction of the lane.

Park in the direction of the lanes travel only. If you see an empty parking spot on the other side of the road, first u-turn so your car is in the right direction.

Tip 5: there can be delays from A to B.

Distances my seem short on the map but winding roads and other restrictions can slow down the speeding limit to 60 km per hour.

Tip 6: beware of the one-lane bridges.

In New Zealand you often find bridges with one lane. Pay attention to the signs showing who gets to cross the bridge first. It is wise to not drive fast and pay extra attention in these new situations.
